The Second Grade Pod is
named for Lake St. Clair. In 1679 explorers from France discovered this
small body of water that plays a big role in the Great Lakes System. They
called it Lac Sainte Claire in honor of Sainte Claire of Assisi whose feast
day fell at the time. Government officials changed the spelling later on to
Lake St. Clair. Other people believe that the lake was named after General
Arthur St. Clair who was the first governor of the Northwest Territory.
Lake St. Clair is very shallow, averaging approximately 10 feet deep with
the deepest at 21 feet. It plays a very important role as a busy connecting
waterway in the Great Lakes system. |
