H1N1 Update

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We would like to take a moment to provide you with some important information regarding H1N1 and what Chippewa Valley Schools is doing to prevent the spread of influenza in our schools.  As you know flu season is upon us and there have been cases of influenza reported in our school community, both seasonal and H1N1.

We continue to follow the guidelines and recommendations of both the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Macomb County Health Department.  Both agencies have advised that it is not necessary to notify parents each time there is a reported case of H1N1 and they have also said it is not advisable to close schools if a confirmed H1N1 case is reported.   These actions are not necessary because we know this influenza virus can be contracted in any number of public settings, not just schools.  We will continue to report communicable diseases to the health department and we will monitor local flu conditions in our schools and community.   And our staff will continue to disinfect all hard, high touch surfaces with viralcidal cleaning agents designed to eliminate these influenza viruses.

We ask parents to continue to keep sick children home from school.  Those infected with the H1N1 virus may be able to infect others beginning one day before symptoms develop and should be considered potentially contagious as long as they are symptomatic and possibly for up to 7 days following the illness onset.  We urge parents to consult with their family doctor if their child exhibits any flu-like symptoms.  H1N1 symptoms can cause fever, headache, muscle aches, cough, runny or stuffy nose, chills and fatigue.  Some individuals may also experience vomiting and diarrhea.

We will continue to stress hand-washing and good hygiene at school and we are asking parents to join us in this effort at home.

To prevent the spread of influenza illnesses, you should…

*Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and dispose of the tissue in the trash after you use it.  If a tissue is not available, cough or sneeze into your elbow.

*Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing.  Alcohol based hand cleaners using at least 60% alcohol are also effective.

*Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth because germs can be easily spread this way.

*Disinfect all surfaces with clean soap and water or disinfectant wipes.

*Stay home from work or school if you are sick and limit contact with others to keep from infecting others.

We will continue to provide you with information and resources related to the H1N1 influenza.   Parents need to understand that at times we may be experiencing higher than average absences in our schools as this flu virus moves through our community.  We appreciate your support and cooperation in helping us prevent the spread of illness this flu season.  For more information about H1N1, visit the Chippewa Valley Schools website at www.chippewavalleyschools.org, visit the Macomb County Health Department website at www.macombcountymi.gov/publichealth, or visit the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/qa.htm.     Thank you.

For the safety of our students...Visitors and guests must sign in at the office.  Thank you!
