The district tournament was a terrific learning opportunity to prepare for
the upcoming county competition.

This chart is to alert you to additional information that is

Please note:

The district Anatomy test was not written by the county event supervisor.  As is true in any event, the volunteer who wrote this test may or may not have interpreted the rules differently than the county supervisor will.  When studying for the county test on May 14th, please refer to your notes from the extravaganza meeting, the rules page, and the FAQ page on the www.macombso.org website.

The person who proctored the test on April 16th was not the person who wrote the test.  She was kind enough to volunteer her time to give the test to our young scientists that day.  It has come to my attention that some of the coaches reviewing the test were less than considerate to this volunteer.  This is very unfortunate!    On behalf of the Science Olympiad program,  the parents, students, and coaches who depend on volunteers like her, I offer her my most sincere apologies for being treated so unkindly.

To answer some of the concerns:

1.  I personally reviewed the test prior to the tournament.  However the purpose of the review is to find diagrams to go with the questions that needed them..  I left the content of the questions to the person who wrote the test.

2.  I realized that some of the questions had more than 3 questions (as written in the rules).   This was more difficult to fix.  It was my decision to keep the test the way it was - with some stations having more than three questions.  If anything, this will make the county test seem just a little easier.

3.  I consider this test to be fair to all of the students taking the test.  The content and the number of questions was the same for all students.  Even though there may have been some questions that were beyond the scope of the rules, many students were able to answer them correctly.  They learned enough about Anatomy to be able to answer the question or at least take a good educated guess at it.  Way to go for those students!

4. Some adults took exception to the fact that the test proctor had a team shirt on that linked her to one of the schools - accusing her of playing favoritism to that school.  Many of the events were run by volunteers that were linked to one of the schools.  I have total confidence in all of the volunteers that they will treat all Science Olympiad students with equality and fairness.

It is my hope that all adults will treat the volunteers at the county tournament with much more respect than was displayed in our Anatomy event at our district tournament.

Helpful tips from the event supervisor:

*Look at the powder(s) in the vial before dumping it out, you sometimes might observe a gray hue for plaster.  Llook at the powder very closely, and then test with your various liquids. Most schools missed the most points with the powders so really make sure you know those.

*only use a little powder to run your tests

*You can mix the powders on the black paper or in the cups.

*work together on the powders since this is the most difficult part

*The vial could contain 2 crystals

*Make sure you and your partner both agree that all parts of the answer sheet is filled out before you say "done"

*be sure to fill in all the yes/no slots

*Be sure to bring your own goggles to the county tournament.
