Bess & Internet

Many of you have expressed frustration at your inability to access blocked sites on those occasions when a site, although deemed unsuitable for students, nevertheless contains some important item for teachers. For example, the following teachers are reportedly being driven crazy.

bulletThe counselor who wants to look up some slang she heard in the hallway so that she can get hip to the jive  be down with the smack understand what is said. She finds the www.urbandictionary.com site blocked due to profanity.
bulletThe media specialist who is trying to order posters for the library. The site is blocked because it sells other posters featuring swimsuit models.
bulletThe English teacher who suspects a student of plagiarism and searches the Internet for the same piece of writing. She's stymied by pages blocked because they are in the "student cheating" category.

Read what categories Bess uses, which ones are filtered in CVS, and how to request a review of a web page at http://www.cvs.k12.mi.us/tiz/help.htm#Bess

None of these teachers really want these web sites unblocked for students. Thus, a Bess override account has been created for teachers to use as a contingency in urgent situations.

Let's consider the word urgent for a moment. The Bess override shouldn't be reserved only for dire emergencies, but it shouldn't be used for trivial or everyday things either. And it should never, ever, never be used by or for students!

Summary:

bulletIf a site is blocked and you feel it should be unblocked because it is categorized incorrectly, please follow the procedure detailed here: http://www.cvs.k12.mi.us/tiz/PreviewWebPages.htm
bulletIf you need to visit a site blocked by Bess that is inappropriate for students, then you don't really want to unblock it for students, you want to use the new Bess Override password. Contact one of the Instructional Technology staff listed below  for info and directions.
